A Different World

A different world, a different universe. call it whatever you want. I've met some really wonderful people this year.

A little preview from my photo essay * A different World* . These photographs were taken when i was in Bombay. There is so much to shoot in Bombay, I am serious. I was out most of the time and i couldn't stop clicking. I was with my friend Rohn and we were discussing about photography. I was planning to photograph him, but it didn't work out because i got busy. But when i was with him, i told him i want to shoot something different, like a tattoo parlor, I am sure everyone living in Bombay has heard of Al's. I met them and let me tell you they are very sweet and down to earth. Every time i was near Bandra, i used to go to their studio and just talk to them. We became good friends. Olly and Arun are really funny guys and Aj, super cool and so many people actually!! and how can i forget Ronan, the cutest and most adorable chile i have seen!.I asked them whether i could photograph their day to day routine for a magazine and they agreed. so here is a small preview from my photo essay.

Bombay- Out of Focus

These were taken in August. I wanted to do something different, I was sitting with my friend Rakhi at Marine Drive and it was about to rain. Well to be honest I do like monsoons but not that much, especially when i am shooting editorials. , ugh. Well, this one is very different. These shots were taken for a magazine, because the editor told me that she wanted something different. SO i said , since i am in Bombay , lets do something surreal and out of this world. SO i decided to name this editorial * Bombay- Out of Focus*. To be honest this is how i see the world when i am not wearing my glasses. Ha! I know , I am blind.

So yeah back to the editorial, I was sitting with Rakhi and i told her * I am tired of seeing the same old pictures of bombay, bombay is such an amazing place to shoot. *. When she saw these photographs, she said" very" . and i started laughing, she was so confused. Some of the shots from my editorial.

Shay Day

I just received an email from Inder. Thought of sharing it with you guys. I am moved, really.

Two Choices
What would you do? make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice? At a fund-raising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?'
The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.' Then he told the following story: Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a fatherI also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of
his handicaps. I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'
Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.
In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again..Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.
However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.
The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.
Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay' Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!
Shay, run to third!' As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team. 'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.
Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!
AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.
The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.
If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.
We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.'
So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process? A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.
You now have two choices:
1. Delete
2. Forward
May everyday be a Shay Day.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

What an experience. It was simply sublime. The atmosphere, chaos. I love it. each and every bit of it. Samant Chauhan's work was organic! Loved it. The kinds i'd love to photograph! I hope i get to shoot backstage in the future.

For many days this thought has been haunting my mind. Is everyone talented? Or are there only few lucky ones? I personally think that everyone is an artist and they should follow their dream. You don’t have to be the brightest crayon in the box, but each crayon has its own uniqueness. One should not let go just because the other person thinks that you’re not worth it. Prove them wrong. Follow it. If you are determined nothing will go wrong trust me. There will be people around you who will always try to break you down. Even today, when I meet people and they ask me what I am doing. They make a funny face and say oh. Are you earning enough? And I say enough to eat 3 meals a day. Everyone wants to be famous, trust me even I wanted to be at some point. It’s really funny when people become friends with you just because you’re famous and only talk to you when they need a favor. That just makes me sad. When my mother asks me what I will do with my life, I say travel the world and live life. Meet people, click photographs and stay with them. She thinks I am crazy. Well, I don’t blame her. I convinced my parents that I am worth it by showing them that I can do it. Photography has turned me into and insomniac. Trust me I used to be one of those people who used to hit the bed at 11.
Today, I was wandering around with one of my closest friend Eshani and we were talking about life. I told her. I am an artist and we like to spread our wings everywhere we go. I have visions sometimes that I am living in either Paris or New York. Clicking photographs and living the dream. I hope I get to one day. I have been feeling awful lately because there are many people who want to bring me down. Trying to break me and crush my dream, but I won’t let it affect me. Good things happen to people who wait. I have been writing so much for past few days, it’s not even funny. Writing is my second love. But I am not a good writer, I think. I am very bad with endings, for example, this.

Bombay shoot

Whilst i was in bombay i photographed a band, tattoo artists, actors, tv celebrity, super yum models etc etc. sigh, i miss it!
The excitement, meeting stylists, the atmosphere, chaos . everything. I have so much to retouch it's not even funny! That is one of the reason why i am not taking new work. I thought why not give you guys a sneaky! This is from my editorial called * Lullaby*.

This was my second last shoot. and my beautiful friend Krish agreed to model for me. We started the shoot pretty late because i was unable to find her house. Bandstand is confusing. :s
This was my first shoot from my new 50mm. I was so excited!
She was so nervous, i just told her to chill and be herself. I had a different idea for this particular shoot, but that didn't happen. Anyway, I had fun! the shoot got over around 7:30 and you guys know how the bombay traffic is , i had to take a train to Thane . The autowala tells me *return ticket hai?* and i said yeah. So he drops me off at Sion station and damn i ran for my life! Firstly, I had no clue where i was. Secondly, My mum was calling me. Thirdly, Which platform? :s
To be honest, i felt like Indiana Jones! with one broken leg and finally it was platform number 12. But still i kept asking people * is this train going to Thane*?
I was so tired by the time i reached home, it was not even funny. But it was fun, i felt free. :)
Here are some of the pictures i shot of Krish.

The Games

Took the metro and reached the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium around 5. The best part was when we realised that our sections were different. But thankfully, it wasn't a big deal. I could hear it, people screaming... i knew that it was straight from the heart. History was made today. with India winning the gold (4x 400 women's relay), India beating England in Hockey ..about almost everything! If you want me to describe the Common Wealth Games in one sentence, I'd say *outofthisworld* I clicked few photographs. Hope you find them entertaining! :)

Much love,

I Feel Like A Gypsy

So here i am, this city is crazy. I have been travelling so much, day and night shooting, meeting new people- tiredness doesnt matter. I think i am going to enjoy my new life. This trip has taught me so much! I am working really hard to build a portfolio, and i will do it, no matter what it takes. So i have been in this city for quite a while now, but still it feels that it's only been 2 days. Time has gone so quicky! I need to shoot! there is so much more to do here! there is not enough time! I want to show you guys what ive shot so badly! but unfortunately that will only happen once i reach home.
I love it here, the sad part is * I don't miss home* . I really dont. but i miss talking to my friends, i really do.
Will keep you posted,

I don't want to be effin' mainstream.

My stay in bombay has been a roller coaster ride so far. I know you want to hear about it, there is so much to say and so much i can't yet say. So i was wondering whether i should wait or tell you what i can now, aa like you even i am very impatient.
Sometimes i don't feel that i am human, i feel that the moon is only 10 steps away. i hate travelling to the same places again and again, i don't know why. But this time it was completely different, I felt like a small fish in the ocean, who wants to make it and be different and shine.I remember being on the plane, i was actua lly very excited, though i refused to look out because i forgot to take out my camera. I wanted to capture it, the surreal clouds, sea. everything! but couldn't.
My 1st day in bombay was spent in bed. I was staying at my friend's house, I felt free, i thank my parents for letting me experience what i am feeling right now. i'm sorry for growing up so quickly and i'm sorry for leaving. but i know you understand better than anyone else. Thank you for giving me the freedom, i know that you are scared and worried , but dont be, i'll be fine.
The following days were spent exploring the city and shooting, late night walks to marine drive, bright lights and even the loudness of it all, theobroma( yummiest place after cocoberry). first 5 days were spent organising, meetings , calling people, shopping.
I see the (big shot) photographers over here, here in India, particularily in Bombay. I personally feel that people should express themselves and not copy. To be honest i don't like their work, its very superficialand boring. I don't feel anything when i see the images.
I know my work is different, soft, inspiring, all that prettiness. and i know my work will get notice. because outside india, it is. I know it will take time over here, but it will . Because I believe.
i feel like i've said nothing in this whole post, like i've left out the world, but i won't go on forever. and if you know me or will know me, maybe i'll tell you more stories when we meet.

Will keep you posted.

Enter Title Here.

I’ve been staring blankly at my computer screen, with no ideas coming to mind. first i was struggling finding a title for this blog post (which i still haven’t decided on at the moment, and will most likely only write down once i’m done writing the whole post) and then i was thinking, wait, what was i even going to blog about? actually i don’t even know. i think i just feel guilty when i don’t post in a little while… but then, you don’t always have things to talk about. or you simply feel they aren’t newsworthy. so here is goes;my last blog post was about a month ago, i feel like i’ve neglected this blog way too much again, but in a way.. things have happened. Since college is over now, I am concentrating on photography. Trying to build a unique portfolio and doing commission shoots side by side. last month i did a photoshoot using my friends Yasmine, Samrridhi and Nandita as a models, I had a really pretty location in mind. The photoshoot went really well, i wanted to click more, but it was way too hot.
My shoot got published in Bite! magazine and phototech magazine(mexico). Then short trip to lala land. It was nice, met interesting people, but then i had to come early, because people tend to take you for granted and i simply hate that. ah, i don't even want to talk about it. Thank god i came early. Bah! and i was interviewed by HT recently , too much fun! I was soo shy, it's not even funny! the photographer told me to smile and i started laughing. Oh man. I cant wait to see my article! People have started asking me why aren't you posting new work? Simple answer: I am not allowed to!
My upcoming shoots are going to be killer! hint: super cars, swimming pool and art! oh maai god! i am super excited. shush.
For more updates you'll have to wait.

My beginning and inspiration

I have been so busy with work its not even funny! I'll speak about that later.
Recently i have been getting many requests like from where i get my inspiration and how i started with photography.
recently someone asked me "

Were you born and raised in India?? It seems like your influences (likes & interests) are so Western did you become familiar with all the stuff you know about "

Lots of stuff inspires me! especially music and Tim burton movies! he is the biggest inspiration!
and emotions!
Ok when i first started which was about a year an a half back,I didn't know much about photgraphy. barely a %, i just use to click pictures and feel good about it. But now i have been doing lot of research, i study about lenses, the techniques, how to manipulate light and use my creativity.
Don't feel bad if you don't know stuff! ask people who know about it and discuss with them. :)
Planning a shoot takes lot of work trust me! I do my research alot when i shoot, look for models, surreal locations. My recent shoot which i did about a week back, lot of shit happened. I had 3 beautiful models in mind out of which only 1 showed up and i had to find other 2 at last minute! They did a good job!
IMPORTANT: always look for a model who you think is best for your theme!
Sometimes preparing for a photoshoot might take longer then you think, i draw ideas out and vision images in my head i want to create as an end result.

I hope this blog entry helped? tell me what inspires you!

My best friend was in town, so i though i'd shoot (not literally) her, I did 2 shoots with her.
